Gran Alacant
Gran Alacant is a collection of different urbanizations and is part of the municipality of Santa Pola in Alicante. Gran Alacant is situated by the sea and features the beautiful Carabassi beach, awarded with the BLUE FLAG, with fine, white sand, beautiful dunes and accessible via wooden walkways. Gran Alacant also has a beautiful nature reserve, El Clot de Galvany. It is a quiet residential area with little traffic and contains everything one could wish for a relaxing holiday, with Alicante and the airport of El Altet 15 minutes away by car. In terms of public transport, there is a regular bus service with Elche, Alicante and Santa Pola and a tourist train runs around Gran Alacant, which is mainly fun to do with children.
In addition to the Carabassi beach and the Clot de Galvany nature reserve, there is much more to do and see in Gran Alacant:
- The lighthouse , the representative symbol of the area, built in 1858 on the observation tower "Atalayola"
- The viewpoint , which offers beautiful views of the sea, countryside, the island of Tabarca and Alicante.
- The chapel of the Virgen del Rosario, a chapel located on the Carabassi beach. Every year on June 20 there is a pilgrimage from Santa Pola to this Ermita where cultural events, equestrian and folk acts, music and dance are celebrated.
- The Cave of Las Arañas , with a chronology that varies between 3000 and 2500 BC. The cave is 19.5 meters deep and 12 meters wide. In it were found flint knives, ceramics with incised decoration embedded in red paste, bone stamps and the most important find was a cave painting of a horse in red. Currently the cave is fenced. It is located on the Carabassi cliff, near the chapel of the Virgen del Rosario. It is an ideal route for walking and observing the landscape.
- The Commercial Center of Gran Alacant, with several supermarkets, shops, banks, restaurants and bars.
- In addition to various water sports, you can enjoy walking and cycling in the area and paragliding for the daredevils. There are also several playgrounds for children.
- Gran Alacant also has a primary school, a medical center, a pharmacy, a town hall, a sports center and a weekly market on Thursdays.
